Because of the innovative nature of this project, and our desire to
disseminate this model to appropriate audiences to improve community-based
scholarship for undergraduates, we are dedicated to careful evaluation
of program processes and outcomes. We are fortunate to have the following
colleagues to assist us as we streamline and implement our formative
and summative evaluation plans:
- Dr. Alan Peterfreund serves as the external reviewer
of this project. Dr. Peterfreund’s key responsibilities include
reviewing the goals and objectives of the project timeline and evaluation
strategy, coordinating the development of a comprehensive evaluation
plan, collaborating with the internal evaluation team to develop,
analyze and report evaluation activities, visiting Duke twice a year,
contributing to annual reports and other publications, and participating
in monthly conference calls with the principal investigators and other
members of the project team. Dr. Peterfreund is an experienced education
evaluator and organizational consultant based in Amherst, Massachusetts
who has supported numerous FIPSE, NSF and NIH education reform projects
in the sciences and humanities at the University of Massachusetts,
partner campuses in the Northeast, and at San Francisco State University.
- Dr. Matt Serra, Director of the Office of Assessment
at Duke’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, serves as our
lead internal evaluator on the project. Dr. Serra’s key responsibilities
for the project include working with Dr. Peterfreund to develop the
comprehensive evaluation plan, collecting and analyzing data at Duke,
supporting the production of annual reports, providing regular updates
to the project team, and committing the time, staff and logistical
support necessary to complete a successful evaluation plan over the
next three years.
Many individuals at Duke outside of the regular program staff have already
been helpful with project evaluation, including: Peter Lange, Provost;
Robert Thompson, Dean of Trinity College; Bill Chafe, Dean of the Faculty
of Arts and Sciences; Mary Nijhout, Dean and Director of Undergraduate
Research; Michael Munger, Professor and chair of the Department of Political
Science; Bruce Jentleson, Professor and chair of the Department of Public
Policy; and a focus group of a dozen undergraduates.
